Kevin Kelly proposed 6 principles for convivial technology:
Cooperation (promotes collaboration)
Transparency (clear origins and ownership)
Decentralization (distributed ownership, production, and control)
Flexibility (I would better call it Extensibility)
Redundancy (not being the only option)
Efficiency (minimizing impact on ecosystems)
Of course, adding a seventh is appropriate - seven gives us the number of completion.
Appropriateness (balance, justice, fittingness)
And, this lets us spell a really lovely acronym: “CRAFTED”.
Good technology is crafted. It is not mass-produced. It is not wound-up and let loose. It isn’t parameters plugged into a neural net which then goes freely, telling us in return exactly what to do. No - good technology is painstakingly crafted by humans.
In these next posts, we’ll focus on each of these principles and how they apply to the development of our technology.
